The Basics of Bathtub Resurfacing

One of the more common jobs is bathtub resurfacing. Even though most bathtubs these days are made from tough fiberglass and acrylic they are still susceptible to becoming scratched, chipped, cracked, and otherwise damaged. However, instead of having the entire bath replaced which can be quite an expensive process, it is in your best interest to engage in do it yourself bathtub refinishing.

The good news is that bathtub resurfacing is actually not as difficult as you might think. All it takes is some preparation and patience and you can have your tub looking brand new again. Just keep in mind that working with certain chemicals is required so there is an element of risk involved.

In order to keep yourself safe you should only work in a room that is well ventilated. You should also wear protective clothing including gloves and a face mask. Before you begin the task of tub refinishing you should also give your bathroom a good cleaning and remove any caulk around the bathtub.

The first solution you will need when participating in DIY bathtub resurfacing is a cleaner that will be able to remove all the soap and oils from the interior of your tub. Next you will have to scrub the surface with sandpaper and then give it a good rinsing off with water in order to make sure the surface is clear of any pollutants.

The next chemical solution you will be using is a chemical reducer which will prepare the tub’s surface for the primer. If there are any cracks in the bath now is the time to use some putty in order to fix them. Afterward sand down the area so it is even with the rest.

In order to protect any areas of the bath that do not need resurfaced cover them up with paper and tape. Once you have finished with this step you will be able to apply the base coat. It is during this step that the fumes are the most toxic so you may need to use a respirator in addition to simply making sure the room is well ventilated. Give the first coat about a half an hour to dry and you can then go on to apply your second and third coat.

Keep in mind that the bathtub resurfacing process will be slightly different for a cast iron tub and a fiberglass one. Regardless as to the type of tub you have however, you will find that bathtub resurfacing is not as difficult as you may think. By doing this job yourself you will also be saving yourself a lot of money.
