All you Need to Reglaze Bathtub Fixtures

Is your tub chipped, worn, cracked, or faded? If so, then you may want to consider bathtub reglazing instead of simply buying a brand new one. Even though you may be apprehensive about taking on such a task, the good news is that it is not really that difficult to reglaze bathtub fixtures. It does not take that long to learn how and by doing so you will be saving yourself a lot of money and bother. This article will provide you with some essential tips to hopefully teach you how to do it yourself.

One of your most important priorities when bathtub reglazing should be safety. Although it may not sound like a dangerous job, you will be dealing with some hazardous chemicals so there are a few things you can do to keep yourself protected. First of all, make sure that the room where you will be working is properly ventilated. This way there is little risk of you breathing in too much of the noxious fumes. You should also make sure that you have the necessary safety equipment as well such as a ventilator, gloves, safety goggles, and a mask.

One of the best things about choosing bathtub reglazing is that you can purchase a refinishing kit that will contain most, if not all, of the materials and supplies you need in order to finish the job. These can contain several different chemicals such as cleaning solutions that can thoroughly remove the soaps and oils from the tub. Another is a certain cleaning solution that scours the surface of the tub so the primer can be applied. Also important is the prime reducer which is needed to remove anything else from the surface of the tub before you apply the primer.

Once these solutions have been applied and the surface is prepared and ready you can begin repairing any cracks or chips with putty. Give it about half an hour in order to dry and then you can begin sanding the areas that you have just repaired in order to make them smooth and consistent with the rest of the tub’s surface. You can now begin covering any area of the tub that does not need bathtub reglazing with paper and tape.

Finally, you can begin applying the base coat. This is a part of the job where wearing a respirator is most important and you should double check that the room is properly ventilated. Always be sure to follow the instructions and give it a good half hour to dry.

All in all, you will find that the cost of DIY bathtub reglazing is much more reasonable than that of replacing the entire thing. These refinishing kits are generally not that expensive and as long as you follow the directions closely you should not run into any problems.
