Learning the Basics of Bathtub Safety

For most people, getting in and out of the bathtub is not a problem. However, for those who are elderly or disabled this can actually be a dangerous activity and most household accidents occur in the bathroom due to this very fact. For this reason, if you are in a high risk group it is in your best interest to learn the basics of bathtub safety so you can keep your chances of injuring yourself to a minimum. This article will introduce you to a few of the most important products that you can install in your bathroom today in order to make it a much safer place.

Probably the first thing you should look into for bathtub safety is a set of grab bars. These are very easy to install and yet very effective. Their main objective is to give you something to grip while getting in and out of the tub which can greatly reduce the risks of falls or other injuries.

These are available in a wide range of colors and sizes so you should not have any problems finding the perfect match for your own bathroom. While two bars are probably enough to support your weight, you can add more as needed. In order to determine where they would best be installed you can consult your doctor.

Also important for adequate bathtub safety are non slip mats. Just as the name suggests, these can be added on both the inside and the outside of your tub so that there is very little risk of slipping. When the bathroom floor becomes wet it becomes very easy to slip, and an elderly person could suffer from severe injuries if this were to occur.

These mats are inexpensive enough that there is really no reason why they should not be installed in any home where a senior citizen is currently residing. These days there are plenty of different designs available so you should not have any problems finding something that goes with your bathroom.

One final thing that you may want to consider for bathtub safety is a walk in tub. This is a relatively new invention that features a door on the side so getting in and out of the bath could not be any easier. Some models even feature built in seats for those who cannot safely stand for prolonged periods of time. These are reasonably priced but are typically more expensive than more traditional styles. Another drawback is that they sometimes leak after a few years and will need repair.

At least for minimum bathtub safety, make sure that you have a rail or some handles installed in your bathroom so that those who have difficulty getting in and out of the bath will be able to do so in a safe and worry free manner.
